Newcastle United have technically made their first signing of the January transfer window.
Swiss defender Fabian Schar has committed to another year at the Toon signing a contract extension to Summer 2025.
It doesn't seem like five minutes ago that Schar extended his previous deal after regaining his golden touch under Eddie Howe, but in a season where we've suffered so many injuries, Schar has been a rock both in terms of staying fit and in his on-field performances.
If anyone has earned themselves a contract extension it's the 32-year-old roaming centre-back.
Fabian Schar struck up a superb partnership with Sven Botman last season which was a huge part in Newcastle's rise to the top four.
This season has been a bit less stable at the back with the wing backs changing almost every game and Schar finding himself playing on the left-side of centre to accommodate Jamaal Lascelles who has had to fill in for the injured Sven Botman.
Through all the upheaval though, Schar has rarely had a bad game. In fact, when he has, it has been a result of everyone around him being poor too, he's never stood out as the root cause of a poor performance. And let's not forget that stunning strike in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain to make it 4-1. That was contract-worthy alone.
Schar seemingly had no reservations about signing on the dotted line yet again telling NUFC TV that he feels at home.
"I feel so comfortable living in Newcastle; I love the city and I love playing for the club and the incredible fans. I can't say enough how much I love them, and how much their support means to me.
Even though he's just turned 32 we still think we'll get another couple of years out of him beyond 2025 if we need to, although by then who knows what state he'll be in given his tendency to pick up a head injury in every game.
Now, if we could sign some actual new players, that would be great also.
