Newcastle United recently sent scouts over to Italy to cast their eyes over Atalanta's highly-rated Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

The 24-year-old has been on Newcastle's radar for a long time and scouts have watched him in action numerous times causing rumours of an imminent bid to grow in recent days.

However, as we know, Newcastle aren't in a position to spend any money right now so when we're being linked with players, especially players of the quality of Ederson, you have to take them with a pinch of salt.

Luke Edwards has heard that Ederson is on Newcastle's radar

Or you can choose to take the cries of poverty with a pinch of salt and hold out for some big surprise deals coming in the next week or so. We know which side of the fence we're on.

Newcastle are keen on Ederson but won't move in January

So too does journalist Luke Edwards who has now claimed that Newcastle do not want Ederson. At least not yet, according to what he said on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast for the BBC.

“Newcastle have been looking abroad as well.

“They have been linked with the Atalanta Brazilian midfielder Ederson. I’m told that’s not entirely true.

“He has been scouted but he’s not a player they want this month.“

Do we not want him, or can we simply not afford him?

The real question is, is he a player they do want this month but can't afford or are they actually biding their time? We know how our current owners like to play the long game in the transfer market after all.

We said yesterday that Ederson would be an amazing signing for Newcastle this winter, but we don't expect it to happen as much as we need a player like him in quickly.

Should Newcastle bring forward their summer budget to make additions in January or wait it out and go wild in the summer? Let us know below.
