Matthew (Matty) Bondswell has agreed to join League Two side Newport County on loan and has already linked up with his new side in South Wales for pre-season training.

The 21-year-old left-back impressed in the lively friendly against Benfica at the real Stadium of Light last July and went on to make 23 appearances in all competitions for our U21s last season.

Formerly of German side RB Leipzig, currently home to one Dominik Szoboszlai, Bondswell has gone out in search of first-team football, having not made a competitive appearance for our senior team in 2022/23.

You can watch Bondswell's welcome interview from Newport's YouTube channel here:

If you'd rather not, here's a summary for you:

  • The decision to move was easy after speaking to Graham Coughlan, Newport's manager
  • He views himself as an attacking full-back/wing-back with a lot of energy
  • The move came about very soon after the end of last season
  • His goals are to settle in quickly and then help the team win as many games as possible
  • He's very excited to meet his new teammates, as he's heard that they're a great group

Everyone at NUFC News wishes Matty all the best for the new season, we have a feeling he'll do really well.
