Newcastle United added two more names to their already-stacked injury list at the weekend when Fabian Schar and Joelinton both left the field in the first half against Fulham.

Both looked to have picked up hamstring injuries with Schar's looking the most serious when the Swiss international pulled up mid-sprint, however Eddie Howe said yesterday in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup tie with Chelsea that it looked like a glute issue rather than a hamstring.

Howe did confirm that Joelinton's injury was his hamstring but went on to allay fans' fears by claiming that neither injury looked serious.

The duo could be absent for the next two games

inews has now said, though, that the injuries will be enough to keep both players our of contention for Chelsea tonight and Luton Town on Saturday.

Botman Returns

It's hardly ideal given just how important both players have been for Newcastle this season.

Prior to the Fulham game at the weekend, Joelinton had picked up our star man in the previous three fixtures. Now we are going into such a big game as the Carabao Cup quarter-final without him, it's a bit of a worry.

Botman is in contention to start against Chelsea

Fabian Schar has been a rock at the back this season, holding down the fort while Sven Botman has been out of action. Now the Dutchman has returned from his three-month spell on the sidelines, we lose Schar. It's a merry-go-round of injuries that just doesn't seem to run out of steam.

Howe has hinted that Botman is fit enough to be in contention to start but he's only had 10 minutes of football under his belt in the last three months so it seems like a huge risk to throw him in from the start against Chelsea tonight.

As we always say, though, we're not involved in training so Eddie Howe will have a much better idea of who is and isn't fit enough to take part.
