Jamaal Lascelles could be close to a move to Besiktas according to reports from Turkey but noises from closer to home suggest otherwise.
The future of Jamaal Lascelles seems uncertain right now with Besiktas reportedly close to landing the 30-year-old Newcastle United captain.
Lascelles had a resurgence at Newcastle this season thanks to a lengthy layoff for Sven Botman, but he could now be on his way out of the club after eight years as a Newcastle player.
This is according to Turkish reporter Gokmen Ozcan via X, however The Chronicle's Lee Ryder has said that it may not be as close as is being reported.
Ryder is adamant that Lascelles wants to stay at Newcastle and also claims that Eddie Howe is hoping to offer his captain a new deal.
"New claims on an "offer" for Jamaal Lascelles from Besiktas coming from Turkey. But the club captain is happy to stay at #nufc . Things can change of course...
"What remains unresolved for Jamaal Lascelles is his contract extension. Runs out this summer but Eddie Howe has stated on the record he sees him as part of future."
As Ryder himself said, things can change, and given Newcastle's seeming need to sell players, selling Jamaal Lascelles makes sense in the grand scheme of things.
That is unless the club also ends up selling Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson too as that will be the captain, vice-captain and another big leader all gone in one fell swoop, and that's potentially a very bad idea.
As things stand, however, it's looking like Bayern Munich could walk away from a deal for Kieran Trippier for now, and Atletico Madrid were only interested in a loan for Callum Wilson, so we could see all three players sticking around until the summer at least.
