Everton (H) player ratings: A joke of a cameo from Paul Dummett heralds the first 1/10 of the season

Injury-stricken Newcastle United conspired to throw two points away against a woeful Everton team at St James' Park on Tuesday evening, with Paul Dummett's introduction from the bench helping the Toffees to a 1-1 draw.

In a first half of pure dominance from the Magpies, Alexander Isak scored a wonderful opening goal after a nice lofted pass from Harvey Barnes, but the Swede's teammates were rather less decisive when given sights of Jordan Pickford's goal.

Barnes missed a massive opportunity, Jacob Murphy shot straight at the visiting stopper and was selfish on another occasion when missing high, while Isak himself probably should have passed when firing over the bar from the edge of the box.

The second period was a very different affair, with Sean Dyche's plodders lumbering their way into the contest and giving as good as they got. While Dummett gave them a huge helping hand with a brainless foul on Ashley Young to concede the late penalty, James Garner had struck a post shortly before that.

At the other end, there was a shocking miss from Isak after a wonderful dribble from Barnes, while Bruno Guimarães failed to execute a 20-yard shot properly, Dan Burn had a goal narrowly chalked off for offside, and other players in black and white were hesitant when getting into shooting positions.

Eddie Howe's side were still worthy of the win regardless, though, with several strong performances but a few stinkers and the worst cameo we've seen in many a year dragged us down to a disappointing final result.

Here's how we saw it from our pew in the Upper Gallowgate and having braved the extended highlights in the cold light of day.

Martin Dúbravka – 5

He got a good hand to Calvert-Lewin's penalty and arguably should have kept it out, but had little else to do in the game. The couple of saves he was required to make were fairly routine, but it was again his deep positioning and poor distribution which were more problematic.

Emil Krafth – 5

On his first Premier League start in two years, the Swede looked like a player who hadn't started a Premier League game in two years. One decent second-half cross aside, this was a bang-average performance from Krafth, though he was better than against West Ham.

Fabian Schär – 7

After his disastrous showing at the weekend, this was much more like it from Schär. He found his long-range passing boots, won all of his ground duels against a strong opponent in Beto, and tried to drive the team forward when the opportunity presented itself.

Dan Burn (c) – 8 ⭐️

He's much better at centre-back than at left-back, isn't he? Winning 15/23 duels and connecting with 91% of his attempted passes, the big man looks so much more comfortable when just being asked to defend. He finished so calmly for the goal that was disallowed, too.

Lewis Hall – 7

A couple of risky cross-field passes aside, this was a very tidy showing from Hall in both defence and attack. It was a huge shame that he was forced off towards the end—not least because of what Dummett did—because he was always willing to provide an outlet.

Sean Longstaff – 6

This was more like it from Longstaff, though he was still nowhere near his best. He put his foot in on a few occasions to win important turnovers, covered a large amount of ground, and was pretty positive in his pass selection. He still looks in need of a rest to us, though.

Bruno Guimarães – 8

The Brazilian did everything in his power to drag us to victory—with his defensive work particularly outstanding—and didn't deserve to leave SJP with anything less than the three points. He's been fantastic for a good while now, after a slow start to the season.

Elliot Anderson – 7

Plenty of people have doubts about Anderson's potential, but this was another good indication that he's going to be some player with more fitness and experience. He was very decent in the first half but ran out of gas towards the hour mark after his long layoff.

Jacob Murphy – 6

Murph had quite a positive first half but ran out of legs after the interval and was barely a factor in the second period from an attacking perspective. He had forced a good save out of Pickford before the break with a technically sound volley and put in some good crosses.

Alexander Isak – 7

Isak took his first goal brilliantly, making a mockery of Branthwaite, Tarkowski, and Pickford in the process. His finishing thereafter was lacking, though, with his shocking close-range miss from Barnes' cutback a turning point in the contest. He needs wrapping in cotton wool now.

Harvey Barnes – 8

Though he missed the first big chance of the game when firing straight at Pickford from close range, he's starting to look the part. Got a nice assist for Isak not too long after and also made the best chance of the game for the Swede in the second half after a good run.

Joe Willock – 4

Willock never really got up to the pace of the game and wasn't a positive introduction, even though it was probably necessary for him to come on given how gassed Anderson was. He hasn't looked the same player since his return from injury, unfortunately.

Paul Dummett – 1

This was the worst cameo we've seen in some time. The concession of the penalty was braindead and his contribution otherwise was almost non-existent, with a load of backwards and sideways passes doing nothing to help us grab a late winner. Hopefully, that's him done.

It's another tight turnaround for Howe and the players, with our visit to Craven Cottage scheduled for a traditional 3 p.m. (BST) kick-off this Saturday afternoon.

Fulham have beaten Brighton and Spurs 3-0 in their last two home league games and have largely been strong in front of their crowd this season.

We're not expecting too much from the game given our injury situation and the level of fatigue the players who have been playing must be feeling, but a win would be massive.
