Newcastle United's record signing Alexander Isak has dismissed talk of breaking Alan Shearer's 20-year goal scoring record despite being just a few goals away.

The Swedish international has had a fantastic season for the Magpies as we enter the latter stages of the campaign.

Isak has bagged 21 goals in all competitions, with 17 of them coming in the Premier League. He has also scored twice in the FA Cup, once in the Champions League and Carabao Cup respectively.

His efforts put him five goals away from equalling Shearer's 22 goal season in the 2003/04 campaign - the last time any Newcastle player scored more than 20 goals in a signing season.

The record doesn't concern Isak

Isak joked with press that they "always find more records and statistics to be beaten". When you're a player as good as him, it's hard not to realise how much of a special player we have on our hands.

"I just play and do my best, it is obviously a nice thing to have." he added.

Newcastle have six games left to play this season, Crystal Palace (A), Sheffield United (H), Burnley (A), Brighton (H and our last home game), Man United (A) before a trip down to London as we play Brentford on the last day.

Isak will have plenty of opportunities to bring his tally up, and you can't doubt that he will.

Shearer showed his admiration for Isak on Match of the Day 2, saying: "When you leave him space he is so dangerous. He is bright and alert and scores all types of goals.

"He just does not panic.

"If you are being really picky then obviously you would want him to be on the pitch more because he has had injuries.

"But what a talent and what a player. Simply superb".

Wilson returning could halt proceedings

Newcastle's number nine Callum Wilson has been out since February with a pectoral injury but has made a return to training this week.

Although Wilson may not catch Isak's goal tally, we could see him make a return to the line-up imminently meaning Isak will most likely be taken off before he can get a full 90 in.

Wilson came close to breaking Shearer's record last season thanks to his 18 Premier League goals which helped Newcastle on their way to a return to the Champions League after 20 years away.

For now though, Isak has shown that he can play a full 90 minutes for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and it's looking likely that he will make it to the 22 goal mark.
