The European Championships in Germany will take place this summer and Newcastle United will be hoping to have a few representatives at the tournament.

While Newcastle have many internationals within their ranks, we're focusing on Gareth Southgate's England squad with four Newcastle players hoping to be on that plane to Germany this summer.

As long as Kieran Trippier returns to action this season and stays fit, we expect Southgate will take the right-back as part of his squad as he's been a regular feature for the former Middlesbrough manager.

However, there are three other Newcastle players who will be hoping to get the nod after being involved in the England set up in some way or another in recent times.

Newcastle have three players on the fringe of the England side

Anthony Gordon received his first caps in the last squad and will be hoping he did enough to keep himself in Southgate's thoughts with one more squad to come before Southgate picks his roster for Euro 2024.

Nick Pope fell out of favour under Southgate before he picked up his injury, but he is expected to return before the end of the season and with Crystal Palace 'keeper Sam Johnstone set to miss out through injury, Pope will be hoping to play his way back into the squad.

Finally, Callum Wilson has missed a lot of football this season through injury, but there's no doubt about his ability to find the back of the net. His strike rate for Newcastle has remained exceptional and if he's fit he stands a chance of being included as backup for Harry Kane.

UEFA are increasing the squad size for the Euros

There was some good news today for the England hopefuls as UEFA are planning to raise the squad size for the tournament from 23 to 26 meaning Southgate gets to name three more players than he was originally expecting to.

With three more places up for grabs we can't see any world in which Anthony Gordon doesn't get picked by Southgate now. He's done more than enough at Newcastle this season to justify his inclusion and even did really well for England when he got called up. The sheer amount of players who can play in a similar position was possibly working against him, but with the extra squad space, Southgate surely has no excuse to not take him now.

Wilson and Pope will have to work really hard to get back into the squad after missing so much football this season, but they will surely be boosted by this news.
