Report: Fifth Newcastle player now said to miss the rest of this season through injury

Newcastle United now have five first-team players who will not play again this season because of injury as the bad luck continues.

The Magpies have had a torrid time of it this season when it comes to injuries with so many players being sidelined for extended periods of time at various points throughout the season.

Even innocuous-looking knocks have turned into bigger deals ... where is Kieran Trippier? He was supposed to return after the international break and now we've got no idea when he'll be back.

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles won't be seen until at least Christmas after both underwent surgery for ACL injuries within the space of a month.

Matt Targett becomes the fifth Newcastle player out for the season

Joe Willock and Lewis Miley have both been told their seasons are over with Willock struggling to recover fully from an achilles injury that has plagued him since the start of the season, while Miley picked up a back injury on international duty.

Both could play, but the club has decided to rest them both until next season to make sure they fully recover, which, given the number of times players have come back too soon and broken down again this season, is a move we can respect.

Now, Newcastle World has reported that a fifth player will not be seen again this campaign, and it will probably come as no surprise that it's Matt Targett.

It is time to call it a day on Matt Targett's Newcastle career

By the end of this season, Targett will have missed 55 games for Newcastle through injury while having only played 42. We initially felt bad for him last season when he lost his place in the team so soon after making his move permanent, but now we just want him gone.

There is absolutely no point in having someone on the books who literally cannot do their job, so whether he is sold, released or whatever, Targett simply has to move on this summer.

It's a shame after such a bright start to his Newcastle career in that half-season he was on loan from Aston Villa, but since he signed permanently, there have been more sightings of Bigfoot.
