Newcastle United are eyeing a move for 18-year-old French attacking midfielder Desire Doue from Rennes but could stay at the club if they qualify for Europe.

The Magpies have been among those linked with a transfer for the young French star, with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund also linked with a move.

At just 18, Doue looks to have made quite the name for himself in his second full season in Ligue 1.

He has become a key player in a Rennes side that is pushing for more European football this season.

Desire Doue has bags of experience at 18

In his career, Doue has played in 53 Ligue 1 games scoring seven goals and assisting six. He has also made 13 appearances in the Europa League, scoring once.

CaughtOffside spoke to Daily Briefing columnist Jonathan Johnson about Doue and his future.

“There have been some transfer rumours circulating about Rennes wonderkid Desire Doue – he’s a very talented young player, very exciting. Johnson said.

"He’s still just 18 years old and looked a bit in and out at Rennes earlier this season, not necessarily seeing eye to eye with the management, but he’s now having a really good season.

“I think his development is going really well, and his maturity has come on leaps and bounds, with the player now earning a bit more trust and being utilised to the best of his ability. A lot of clubs are now interested in his situation, and would be very happy to pick him up should he become available.

“There was a scenario when he might’ve gone out on loan in the January transfer window, though obviously that situation has turned around quite substantially now and it’s bigger clubs showing an interest. I think the biggest thing that affects his future now will be whether or not Rennes qualify for Europe or not.

The thought is that if Rennes do secure Continental football for next season, he will stay. If they fail however, there is a big chance he will be on the move.

Rennes currently sit seventh in Ligue 1, six points off the final European place with four games to go.
