Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope had fallen out of favour with England boss Gareth Southgate lately with Crystal Palace 'keeper Sam Johnstone replacing him in the squad.

To add injury to insult, after being dropped by Southgate, Pope then dislocated his shoulder in the game against Manchester United at the start of December which has kept him out of action ever since.

Pope is expected to return from injury in April which could see him back in action for Newcastle for the last few games of the season.

Now with Fabrizio Romano claiming today that Sam Johnstone is expected to miss the rest of the season through injury, Pope has a chance of playing his way back into Southgate's thoughts going into Euro 2024.

Nick Pope could get back into the England squad for Euro 2024

It's a slim chance, but it's definitely not beyond the realms of possibility.

Whether he can play his way onto that plane to Germany or not, Newcastle fans will be more than happy to see their first-choice 'keeper back in action.

Pope came in for some stick this season from the fans as his performances weren't quite up to what we expect, but since he's been injured it has become clear just how important he is.

Could summer see Newcastle bringing in a new goalkeeper?

Martin Dubravka has deputised to the best of his ability, but it's clear that his ability is nowhere near that of Nick Pope's, and the one time Loris Karius was called into action he shipped four goals against Arsenal.

Last night Martin Dubravka withdrew from international duty ahead of Slovakia's game citing personal reasons. However, he is expected to be fine to play for Newcastle on Saturday as West Ham come to St James' Park.

We expect there could well be a shake-up when it comes to goalkeepers this summer. We already know Loris Karius will leave the club, but will Eddie Howe also move on Dubravka and bring in a new 'keeper? We still have Mark Gillespie after all. Remember him?
