Newcastle United battered Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park yesterday and are now looking to heap more misery on the London club by beating them to one of their main summer transfer targets.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has been a long-time target for Ange Postecoglu but now The Mirror is reporting that Newcastle have made the England U21 captain their main transfer target of the summer.

The 24-year-old has starred for Nottingham Forest this season despite the club's struggles in the Premier League and has picked up five goals and seven assists in 32 Premier League games.

While The Mirror uses the threat of a Bruno Guimaraes departure to sell the credibility of the story, Gibbs-White is the type of player who would be excellent for Newcastle.

Gibbs-White's versatility makes him an ideal signing

The attacking midfielder can play on either flank as well as through the middle and even as a centre-forward if needs be. That's the type of versatility we need, but we can see Gibbs-White replacing Miguel Almiron on the right side of our attack.

Although Eddie Howe finally moved Anthony Gordon to the right against Spurs to accommodate Harvey Barnes on the left as part of a front three with Alexander Isak in the middle and it worked wonders, we'd still need more options and Gibbs-White could cover all three positions.

He won't come cheap, though, with Tottenham having been told they'd have to cough up more than £50million to prise him away from the City Ground according to Team Talk.

Newcastle could end up in a three-way tug-of-war for Gibbs-White

Arsenal are also said to be tracking Gibbs-White which is good and bad news for Forest who won't want to lose one of their best players, but could absolutely do with a cash injection after being hit with a points deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules.

There have been a lot of transfer stories involving Newcastle lately and this is one that we really hope has legs. We think Gibb-White is an ideal signing for Newcastle, and definitely ticks a lot of boxes for what Eddie Howe is trying to achieve.

£50million is no small chunk of change for the player that Jermaine Jenas branded as 'special' on Match of the Day last season, especially with our own battle against PSR so well documented, but like Anthony Gordon, Gibbs-White could prove to be a bargain.
