Report: What Lewis Miley will be doing now his season is potentially over through injury

Newcastle United wonderkid Lewis Miley could potentially be out for the rest of the season after picking up a back injury while on international duty.

The highly-rated 17-year-old has had a meteoric rise at Newcastle in the last year and for his season to be potentially cut short due to injury is a huge blow for Miley and the club.

However, it won't just be rehabilitation that will be keeping Lewis Miley busy in the coming weeks as the youngster looks to finish his BTEC in Sports Science as revealed in an in-depth look at Newcastle's Academy by iNews' Mark Douglas.

All of Newcastle's academy players are enrolled on a BTEC Sports Science course when they sign their full-time contract as part of the club's commitment to education as well as the youngster's futures. If an academy player doesn't make the grade as a player, they will have earned enough UCAS points doing the BTEC that they can go on to university or even an American scholarship program.

This means that while Lewis Miley has been rising to prominence in the Newcastle United first team and taking on the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, he's also been continuing his studies behind the scenes.

Part of the BTEC qualification requires Miley to be in the classroom nine hours a week split over three three-hour sessions. It's crazy to think that this season Miley has been playing in the Champions League one night then back in the classroom the next day.

Miley has just two pieces of work to go to complete his qualification and the fact that he's still on course to do so despite being such a regular feature in Eddie Howe's first-team squad is a testament to his commitment.

Miley has kept his feet on the ground

Newcastle's head of education, Darren Darwent spoke to iNews and was full of praise for Miley.

“I haven’t bothered him while he’s been training with the first team or away with England.

“But the week after next I’ll get him down here for a session. He’s got two pieces of work to do and then he’s done but you know he’ll do it. He’s such a nice lad and a great example to the others.”

It really has been a whirlwind season for Miley, but it seems like he's kept his feet thoroughly on the ground.
